Kathmandu- Actress Roshni Karki has played the lead role in the film 'Lalima', which will be released on February 29. In the film, she plays the character of a sex worker, 'Lalima'.
Roshni has opened up about the preparations she made to create the character ‘Lalima’. Roshni, who comes from a theatre background, is playing the role of a sex worker for the first time.
Sex workers work in secret. They want to keep their profession a secret. Roshni did not know any sex workers and had no access to them. However, to create the character, he needed to meet a sex worker.
He says, “I don’t know any sex workers. Who would call themselves a sex worker? I don’t even know their profession. I had to meet them for reference.” She argues that she felt it was appropriate to meet with sex workers to understand their mindset.
Roshni says, “The film focuses more on the mindset of sex workers. To understand what the mindset of sex workers in the Nepali environment is, I needed to meet with them.”
She revealed that she got help in the production after talking to 10 sex workers who were in contact with the production team. She says, “I talked to the sex workers. However, they told me about their problems, pain and mood. It helped me in creating the characters.”
She says that the sex workers found in this way range from college-aged teenagers to those in their mid-twenties.
She says, “I found that they all came into this profession because of financial problems. They range from teenagers to those in their mid-twenties. They came into this profession to overcome their financial problems.”
She is satisfied with being able to represent the mindset and pain of a large number of sex workers. She says, “As an artist, I have become their voice. I have done what I can for them. At least I have tried to portray their mindset and problems on screen.”
